Professional
positions: Began work towards a Ph. D. in September, 1972 on the Synthesis of Natural
Butenolides under the supervision of Dr. (now Professor) G. Pattenden. Degree awarded in
July 1975. Successfully applied for a Royal Society Postdoctoral Fellowship under the
European Science Exchange Program to work with Professor A. Eschenmoser at ETH, Zurich.
Award was not taken up as was appointed lecturer in Organic Chemistry at University
College, Cardiff from 1st January 1976. Moved to a similar position at Nottingham in 1979
and was promoted to a Readership in Organic Chemistry in 1989. Elected to Fellowship of
Royal Society of Chemistry, 1987. Awarded Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research
Fellowship, 1994-1995. Appointed Professor of Synthetic Organic Chemistry at Cardiff
University, March 1995.
Professor Knight
has published over 160 original research papers, mainly in the areas of organic synthetic
methodology and natural product synthesis but also in the areas of Analytical and
Medicinal Chemistry.
